Former Chief of the Transition Economies Section of the UN Economics Commission for Europe
Judith Shapiro was Chief of the Transition Economies Section of the United Nations Economics Commission for Europe and a Professor at Moscow’s graduate school of Economics, the New Economics School, before coming to LSEs Economics Department as Departmental Undergraduate Tutor, the department where she once earned her PhD. She was part of the advisory group (“Sachs team”) in Russia shortly after the end of th USSR and for 8 years was a member of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs; advisers in the Expert Group on Development Issues. As a member of the European Forum Economic Programme Group she co-authored 3 books on the transition from communism to capitalism and the re-unification of Europe. Her own recent research focuses on health and population, especially in Russia, for example, the forthcoming “Demographic Challenges” in The Oxford Handbook of the Russian Economy.
